What are liposomal dietary supplements?

Simply put, liposomal supplements are liquid supplements with the nutrient bound to liposomes, which help promote the absorption of the nutrient in the body. Liposome comes from the words "lipo" and "soma", which are Greek for fat and body. A liposome is composed of phospholipids (lecithin) and has the same structure as a cell membrane. The nutrient is located in the nucleus of the liposome, which is surrounded by a layer of fat. Liposomal supplements are concentrated, and are usually dropped under the tongue, where they are absorbed into the cells. Thanks to this immediate absorption, the bioavailability of the nutrient increases.

Liposomal supplements are more expensive than standard supplements due to the advanced technology behind them. However, liposomal supplements are very cost-effective and the effect is more powerful, which makes them worth the price.

Here’s how liposomes work

A liposome works by protecting the nutrient and delivering it to the cells. Liposomes are made up of the same mass as cell membranes, which increases the recognition factor in the body. This makes it easier for the nutrient to access the cells and work where it is needed. The nutrient does not have to take a detour via the stomach and stomach acid, so doesn’t risk being destroyed there. Uptake begins in the mouth, making it efficient and increasing bioavailability.

Vitamin C levels in the blood
In a study* of our own liposomal vitamin supplements QURE Liposomal C and QURE Liposomal C Pure, a total of 24 people received vitamin C supplements in various forms. 12 people received supplements of vitamin C in powder form, mixed with water. The remaining 12 received our liposomal vitamin C supplements. The results showed that the test subjects who received our liposomal vitamin C had 6.6 times higher vitamin C content in their blood compared to the those who received vitamin C powder, and the highest measured level was 5 hours after ingestion.

Studies have shown positive results when using liposomal supplements, indicating that vitamins encapsulated in liposomes provide a higher amount of vitamin that the body can use compared to vitamin supplements in other forms.

Usage and storage  

Liposomal supplements in liquid form are absorbed extra fast by the body if you drop the liquid under the tongue and hold it for 30 seconds before swallowing. It is also possible to swallow the liquid immediately. You can also mix it into a glass of water or juice and drink it, as the vitamin is protected and won’t be broken down by the stomach acid. Liposomal supplements are heat sensitive, and an opened package should be stored refrigerated and consumed within 8 weeks.  

Are there any side effects of liposomal supplements?

Liposomal supplements do not have any negative side effects in themselves, but just like with all other supplements, it is above all important to take the product recommendation and which nutrient is involved into account.
