Take care of your eyes with lutein
Healthwell Lutein 100 Plus is a high-dose and carefully designed supplement with 100 mg of natural lutein from calendula, as well as added blueberry extract and vitamin C for optimal effect. Lutein is found in high concentration in the retina of the human eye and occurs naturally in several different foods. Thanks to its various properties, the substance is a common ingredient in dietary supplements for the eyes. Carotenoids are a provitamin that can be converted to vitamin A, which in turn is needed for a normal function of the eye. The supplement is completely vegan and is taken once a day in conjunction with a meal.

What is lutein?
Lutein is a so-called carotenoid, which is a type of provitamin that can be converted into vitamin A when needed. There are different types of carotenoids, and lutein belongs to the subgroup of xanthophylls, a type that is mainly found in the eye of humans and some animals. Lutein, for example, occurs in high concentration in the macula of the retina of the human eye. Lutein also occurs naturally in several foods such as marigolds, blueberries, kale and broccoli. The lutein in Healthwell Lutein 100 Plus comes from calendula (Calendula officinalis) and blueberries.
Lutein is fat soluble, which means it needs fat to be broken down in the body. Therefore, it is best to eat carotenoids such as lutein with meals. Lutein is also used as a natural coloring agent in, for example, ice cream, confectionery and desserts.
What is lutein good for?
Because the carotenoid lutein is a provitamin, it can be converted into vitamin A if needed. Vitamin A works, among other things, for normal vision and the normal function of the eye. In recent years, the subject has also been studied in connection with eye diseases. According to a scientific analysis from the University of Palermo in Italy, lutein appears to improve, and perhaps even prevent, age-related macular disease, i.e. retinal disease (1). However, more research is needed to be able to draw any conclusions.
Added substances for eye function
Healthwell Lutein 100 Plus is a carefully formulated supplement, and in addition to lutein also contains blueberry extract and vitamin C. The blueberry, our Nordic superberry, is packed with healthy nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Just like the marigold, blueberries contain lutein, but also flavonoids such as anthocyanins. These are thought to help protect the vitamin A in the eye from being broken down. Vitamin C, in turn, is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body's cells against free radicals, and thus counteracts oxidative stress.
The marigold also contains the substance zeaxanthin, another carotenoid that belongs to the xanthophyll group. This is also found in the retina of the eye and is important for normal vision.
How is lutein dosed?
There are no studies to suggest that lutein can be overdosed, but to avoid possible side effects, you should follow the dosage recommendation. Take 1 capsule of Healthwell Lutein 100 Plus daily, preferably with a meal.
