What is a medicinal mallow and what is it used for?
Marshmallow root is a plant in the family of Malva plants and is a perennial herb that grows wild, especially in Africa and parts of Europe. The plant has a centuries-old tradition of use and it has been used in several cultures, including the Indian art of Ayurveda. One of the reasons for this is the plant's content of a type of plant slime which in turn is rich in slime substances and tannins. It is mainly the underground parts of the marshmallow root that are used in supplements, as these contain most of these mucus substances.
In the past, people used to boil the roots or stems and consume them when it was thought that it could relieve, among other things, sore throat, respiratory problems and indigestion. Medical mallow has also been used externally on the skin for various skin conditions.
Does marshmallow root have any side effects?
Marshmallow root has no known side effects if you are healthy and follow the recommended dose. However, absorption of other concomitant drugs may be delayed. Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or who have a medical condition should consult a doctor before use. Diabetics should be careful and control their blood sugar during intake.
