Benefits of pine bark extract
Pinus pinaster, which is the extract of the bark of the maritime pine, is rich in proanthocyanidins that act as antioxidants that, among other things, help to protect the cells from oxidative stress. When we inhale oxygen and it is metabolized in the body, free radicals are formed which are very active. We need reactive substances in low levels, but when the levels become too high, so-called oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress is important for the development of, among other things, inflammatory diseases and cardiovascular diseases.
The antioxidant compounds found in pine bark extracts have been used in many studies and have traditionally been used for, for example, seasonal hypersensitivity. Pine bark extract does not cause any irritating side effects like traditional treatments can.
Pine bark extracts have been on the market for more than 40 years and have been investigated in a large number of studies. In one study in Canada, 39 people were tested with pycnogenol for 5-8 weeks before the birch pollen season. Here, a big improvement could be seen when it came to pollen symptoms in the people who used pycnogenol compared to a placebo. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20549654/)
