Natural carotenoid
Astaxanthin is considered a natural carotenoid and is also the substance that gives shellfish and salmon their red colour. Carotenoids are also a precursor of vitamin A, which is needed for normal function of eyesight, skin, and mucous membranes. Carotenoids are thus a pro-vitamin A, which means that the body can convert it to vitamin A as needed. Carotenoids belong to a group of organically fat-soluble nutrients and colourants that are found naturally in plants, including algae. Carotenoids give the alga its colour and acts as protection – an antioxidant.
Carotenoids are divided into two different groups: carotenes and xanthophylls. Astaxanthin is considered a xanthophyll and is a fat-soluble pigment, which means that the substance is best absorbed in the body when taken with food.
Haematococcus pluvialis – astaxanthin
Super Astaxanthin contains the alga Haematococcus pluvialis, a single-cell microalga, which, despite its size, does a lot of good. The name comes from the Greek words Haema, meaning blood, and coccus, meaning seed, and the Latin word Pluvialis, which means rain. Its name refers to the alga's red content, even though it actually belongs to the green alga family. But it is the red content that the alga has been recognised for. The species thrives in clear lakes, at surface waters in ponds and puddles. The alga undergoes various phases and during its transformation process, a red pigment is formed inside the cell called astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a natural substance and an antioxidant that protects the alga from breaking down.
Besides being popular in dietary supplements for self-care, astaxanthin is also used in farmed salmon feed. The substance is important for the salmon's development. Wild salmon gets it through the small crustaceans that they eat and that, in turn, have eaten algae.
