Lutein for your eyes
Super Lutein is capsules from Healthwell that contain a high dose of natural lutein from both blueberries and calendula. These two plants have become highly popular ingredients in dietary supplements that focus on the eyes, as they contain carotenoids. Carotenoids are a pro-vitamin that can be converted into vitamin A, which, in turn, is needed for normal function of the eye. Carotenoids are fat-soluble, naturally occurring substances in nature and contain the two active ingredients found in Healthwell Super Lutein: lutein and zeaxanthin.

Lutein from blueberries
The blueberry is our own Nordic super berry, filled with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Healthwell Super Lutein has added blueberry extract, since it is incredibly rich in lutein, a nutrient that belongs to the carotenoid family. Carotenoids are organic nutrients that are frequently studied to see if they may have antioxidant properties. Lutein belongs to a sub-group of carotenoids, called xanthophylls. These are found mainly in the eye of humans and some animals and must be added through diet. Lutein has therefore, for some time, been studied by researchers to find out exactly what effect a supplement of lutein has on preventing various ailments of the eyes.
Properties of calendula
Super Lutein also contains extract from calendula (Calendula officinalis), which is rich in the carotenoid lutein and thus also contributes to normal vision. Calendula extract is also a popular ingredient in skincare because of its emollient properties on dry and cracked skin. The calendula has been found in Sweden since the Middle Ages, but is originally from the Mediterranean.
What is zeaxanthin?
As a complement to lutein, Healthwell Super Lutein also contains zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are both considered xanthophylls and, together, they constitute the two primary substances in the retina of the eye. In other words, they are both important for normal vision and they both need to be added through the food we eat. Zeaxanthin is found in, for example, maize, egg yolk, and orange peppers, but with the Healthwell capsules, you get a proper daily dose without having to eat the exact amount of these foods.
