Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant
Vitamin E acts primarily as an antioxidant in the body, protecting the cells from degradation by free radicals. The processes of degradation by free radicals and defence by antioxidants are constantly ongoing in the body. It is when the free radicals get the upper hand that oxidative stress occurs, which breaks down our cells. This may happen, for example, in periods of excessive stress, significant sun exposure, or unhealthy habits, such as smoking or an inadequate diet. Antioxidants help counteract the advance of these free radicals. Vitamin E protects the polyunsaturated fatty acids that build up cell membrane from degradation. Vitamin E is abundant in fatty plant products, such as nuts and avocados.
