What is a detox?
In this category, we assume that the word detox stands for the general perception of the diet, which entails excluding chemicals and refined foods in favour of very nutritious vegetables. Here, detox serves as a collective name for products that are extra nutritious and that fit into this type of diet.
Detox is short for detoxification. A detox is a type of diet in which the primary aim is to cleanse the body of residue products and toxins, instead adding extra nutrition for a period of time in the hope of achieving better absorption of nutrients in the intestines, an improved immune system, new energy and healthy hair, skin and nails as a result. There is still no scientific basis for detox to work as its main aim is intended, and for many, a detox regimen is more like a fresh start to a healthier diet after a period of high stress and poor foods. There are different types of detox, with liver detox and intestinal detox being the most common. The body constantly works to be healthy and cleanse itself of harmful substances and toxins and the liver acts as the body's cleansing machine.
Following a detox regimen
A detox treatment can last for different lengths of time, but what most detox methods have in common is that they adhere to a certain structure according to a detox program with a specific menu, and that it’s easy to detox at home. A cleansing treatment can last for several weeks at a light level, with more intensive detox treatments lasting 2, 7 or 14 days. There are also those who prefer to detox one day a week over a long period of time, which can be seen as a mixture of a detox and the 5:2 diet.
A detox menu offers dishes with lots of fruit, berries and vegetables of every colour, high-fibre carbohydrates and lots of water. During a detox, you exclude toxins such as caffeine, tobacco and alcohol, refined foods high in sugar and white flour, as well as red meat and foods with various additives. Dark green leafy vegetables, ginger, beetroot and lemon are good elements of a detox diet. Quinoa and brown rice are common carbohydrate sources. The basic idea is to make the body more alkaline and therefore choose alkaline foods instead of acidic products. Also, remember to drink plenty of water during a cleansing regime.
Many people choose to take a detox treatment one step further and also include meditation and yoga as a daily feature. For example, try starting the day with a cup of detox tea or a glass of lukewarm lemon water and yoga for a while before you start the day's activities.
What is diet?
A diet is a regime consisting of a person's overall eating habits and dietary intake. Diets can be free from sugar, milk, gluten or animal products. Many diets focus on weight loss, but might also entail excluding foods you’re allergic to, diabetes-friendly eating or eating for other medical conditions.
